My Maria – Brooks & Dunn

Brooks & Dunn are an American country music duo, consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn. Both Brooks and Dunn had worked as singer-songwriters before the duo’s formation, charting singles of their own in the late 1980s. The duo made its debut in 1991 with their first four singles all reaching the top of the US Billboard country music charts. Their debut album, Brand New Man, was released the same year and was certified 6x platinum by the RIAA. Brooks & Dunn have had more than forty singles on the country music charts, twenty of which have reached number one. They have recorded ten studio albums, two greatest-hits compilations, and a Christmas album. Brooks & Dunn also won the Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year award every year between 1992 and 2006, except for 2000 when Montgomery Gentry took the honor. In addition, Brooks & Dunn won the Entertainer of the Year award in 1996. Two of the duo’s singles have also been named as Billboard magazine’s Number One country singles of the year: “My Maria” (1996) and “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” (2001). Since early 2006, Kix Brooks has also hosted American Country Countdown, a nationally syndicated radio program which counts down the Top 40 country singles in the United States as determined by the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. B.W. Stevenson’s version is way, way better. Rhyhm section is top notch. These guys are lame by comparison.

You should give credit to B.W. Stevenson and Daniel Moore the people who wrote this song….Not Brooks and Dunn.
B.W. Stevenson (5 October 1949 – 28 April 1988), born Lewis Charles Stevenson, was an American country pop artist, . “B.W.” stood for “Buckwheat.” B.W. Stevenson is most famous for his song “My Maria”, co-written with Daniel Moore. “My Maria” became a smash hit, reaching #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1973. B.W. Stevenson died undergoing heart valve surgery at the age of 38

B.W. Stevenson and Daniel Moore had a Top 10 hit, peaking at #9 on the US pop chart. It remained in the Top 40 for twelve weeks. In addition, “My Maria” spent one week at #1 on the US adult contemporary chart.

Brooks & Dunn released a cover version of “My Maria” in 1996, the song reached #1 on the US country chart… their version was the number one country song of the year 1996 according to Billboard.

B&D seems to have done better with the song than the original artists.

I totally disagree. This opinon is coming from a long time musician.

I understand your comment, my info came from Wikipedia, not from my opinion.

Regardless, it’s a wonderful song that ages well.

    Thanks for your feedback.

I love the BW Stevenson song, but Brooks & Dunn did slightly better.

Allow me to settle this: some people like B.W. Stevenson’s version better, others like myself prefer this version of the song. While both are great, people are going to like the version they grew up hearing better in most cases. Stevenson’s is the original, and I mean no offense when I say that as a musician, Brooks & Dunn’s version is musically & vocally superior. They definitely did the song justice, and their version of the song was the one that reached #1.

This song brings back memories. I was riding in my mom’s car when I was like 6 when I first heard this song. It stuck with me all this time, and I still like it.

  11. Rikki0 says:

I was 23 and in the service when B.W. Stevenson’s version came out, so it’s the one I “grew up” with. I was 46 when the B & D version came out. To be honest, I am pretty well satisfied listening to either version. Both are a pleasure.

I don’t know, the original had Jim Gordon on drums and Larry Carlton on guitar, two of the best back then. And BW’s vocals were pretty good too. But I do like B&D’s version, they were smart to stay true to the original and they did a good job.

Back when I was in 5th grade, our bus driver used to listen to a country station all the time, and they played this song like every 3 or 4 days. That was bout 11 years ago, and every time I hear this song, it reminds me of throwing stuff at the 2nd graders at the fornt of the bus.
